Dear Brothers and Sisters, I hope this message finds you all healthy and in good spirits. As you all know, this month's general meeting was cancelled due to the present health crisis. As I have stated, my staff and I have been working diligently from home in an effort to preserve as much normalcy for the membership as we can. Although it is under much different circumstances, we do have some information we would like to pass along to keep everyone abreast to the current events. At this time, this is the closest we can get to an actual Business Manager's report:
- I am pleased to report that early in April we were able to negotiate via conference call with Right of Way (R.O.W.) and came to a contract agreement in principle. This contract was subsequently ratified by 100% of those members on 4-17-20. Some highlights of this agreement are that it is a 3-year deal, there is an Employer contribution of $0.30/hr. increase each year to the health and welfare portion of this contract with an annuity contribution increase of .25% each year for the length of the contract. And lastly, wage increases of 3.0% for the first year and 3.25% for the two following years.
- Local 1049 will be resuming negotiations with NECA beginning April 30th. This will also take place over a conference call. This had been postponed from March 31st. We are optimistic in our ability to negotiate a fair and reasonable contract for our 400+ outside electric members.
- Out of the approximately 4200 overall members, about 200 are furloughed and/or laid off. Most, if not all of these are due to the National Grid suspension of "non-emergency" gas work. The latest word on this suspension is that it will continue until at least May 18th, due to the NY on Pause initiative.
My staff and I will continue to keep close contact and consult with all utility companies and contractors to assure the best health and safety practices as we continue to navigate this pandemic. All the Staff and Leadership at local 1049 and all of the companies we are affiliated with are very proud of the outstanding job that all 1049 members have been performing during this time. I am not surprised at the level of professionalism that is displayed every day. To ALL our 4200 members, thank you so much.
In closing, it is very likely that we will be cancelling the next general meeting that is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19th. Like everything else associated with this pandemic we will have to keep this under close consideration to keep everyone as safe as possible. If you have any questions regarding this report please contact your business representative. May you all stay healthy and well and please watch the Hotwire and our website for more updates.
