IBEW 1049 EWMC Reports

As proud members of the EWMC, we want to ensure that we properly represent ourselves in the community. Throughout the quarter, as well as this past year, our members have consistently displayed philanthropic behavior that has been recognized in our community.

Christmas Ugly Sweater Party

Our EWMC Chapter decked the halls with a night of food, drinks and good company. We turned the Hibernian Hall in East Islip into an Ugly Sweater Extravaganza. While there was an influx of ugly attire, only one came out on top to win Ugliest Sweater. Vice President Amanda Mitchell! Many baskets were giving out to a few lucky winners including our International Secretary/ Treasurer Godfrey King. The fundraiser was a complete success. Not only did we raise over $1000.00 but we were able to create wonderful rapport with the owner of the establishment. He was thrilled at the turnout and excited to do more events with the EWMC.

The American Red Cross: Smoke Alarm Checks and Installs
Safe behavior is extremely important in the Union world. Whether you are in an office or on a job site, making sure each member goes back to their families safe and sound is our number one priority. Since the emphasis on safety procedures and precautions are so strong, we wanted to continue this concept to our surrounding neighborhoods. Our Chapter teamed up with National Grid to assist The American Red Cross to ensure that fire and carbon monoxide concerns would not be an issue in the Far Rockaway Community (Nassau County, NY). The whole day consisted of going into homes and checking to make sure the fire alarms, as well as the carbon monoxide detectors, worked properly. If a faulty detector was found, it was replaced with a brand new one. Collectively, 139 life saving devices were installed in 46 homes. Imagine, all those families that were taken out of harm's way!
But what is safety without education right? The volunteers also spoke about fire safety and carbon monoxide symptoms. The appreciation of the residents was overwhelming, and we were proud to bring awareness to such an important part of home care and family protection.
MSC Kyle Sports for Special Needs Program Bake Sale
We were honored to help organize a bake sale for the MSC Kyle Sports for Special Needs Program. After hearing the story of this inspirational organization, it was imperative for us to get involved. MSC Kyle Sports Program promotes inclusiveness for all children no matter what disability or physical aliment they may have. It gives these children a sense of independence and belonging while playing their favorite sports. After sharing the mission of MSC Kyle, we had an influx of donations and an overwhelming amount of support from our Union brothers and sisters. Our EWMC Chapter was able to collect and donate over $500 to MSC Kyle and proudly presented this donation at an MSC Kyle Event. It was an amazing experience to see children laugh and play in an environment where they feel welcome and comfortable.

Have a Heart Valentine's Day Bake Sale
Members turned to their inner cupids to help raise money for the St. Ignatius Human Service Center in Hicksville, NY. We volunteered to help a wonderful organization called Hands Together NY, to raise money for this center. Cookies, cupcakes and chocolate, oh my! On-lookers stopped to satisfy their inner sweet tooth while donating to a good cause. We were pleased to work with Hands Together and discussed future volunteer opportunities. Who knew our cupcakes would be a hit!

This is what we've accomplished thus far, with more projects to come in the upcoming year. We are grateful to represent such an impactful organization.-Alyssa Rivera,Recording Secretary,EWMC Local 1049
