New York Constitutional Convention 2017

One of the biggest battles we will face this year is on the November ballot.

It is a referendum to hold a Constitutional Convention. On Election Day - Nov. 7, 2017 - voters will be asked to decide whether the state should redraft the state's charter document - its constitution.

This referendum will overshadow all other decisions citizens will be asked to make that November, and the outcome could have far-reaching effects for decades to come. Opening up the constitution may sound great; particularly for those who are looking for change - for the new and improved version; if you will. But as the old saying goes - "Be careful what you wish for" or "The devil is always in the details."  These statements could not be any truer this year.

In order to educate union members,  the NYS AFL-CIO will be conducting Constitutional Convention Training at IBEW Local 25's meeting hall, 370 Motor Pkwy A, Hauppauge, NY, on May 11, 2017 at 6:00 pm.  I encourage you to attend, and bring as many members as you can to participate. Much of the safeguards and protections we enjoy as union members; such as prevailing wage and public pensions are embedded in our State Constitution.  We cannot leave any of this to chance. Come to the workshop, learn what all of this really means, and be prepared to make the argument on why you are voting NO on November 7th.
